Lux Onyx

Onyx Review

“Modesty is for saints and losers. I’m neither.”

THIS CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

Onyx is the second book in the Lux series by Jennifer L Armentrout. If you are looking for a review on the first book Obsidian you can find it somewhere on the blog (don’t know how it works but it’s there I promise).

Onyx continues on right from where Obsidian left off after the big fight with the Arum and Daemon ending up healing Katy. Katy feels fine at first but soon gets a high temperature and when it looks like she is gonna meet her end, she is suddenly fine. Blake soon turns up a California bred surfer who seems a little too good to be true. All of this is dowsed in a healthy serving of sexual tension as Katy denies her feelings for Daemon as he makes them near impossible to avoid. But this is put on the back burner all because of one question. Is Dawson alive?

Ok I have a problem with Daemon in this book. His behaviour towards Katy really made me uneasy. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that he’s protective and that he’s lost a lot with Dawson but the way he treats Katy like a possession calling her his and conditioning like behaviour made me not his biggest fan. Like he redeemed himself and he clearly loves Katy, but it was almost like he was putting his claim on her when he’s giving her gifts at school. But that being said they are really sweet I just think he could have gone about it in a way where he wasn’t being so public and staking his claim on Katy.

I feel Adam’s death was undermined by the whole Katy and Daemon make out, second base thing. Like I get it the whole death and living in the moment thing blah blah blah, but Adam deserves better. We got to know him as this sweet character who was accepting of Katy. He even joined Dee at their table instead of the other Luxens. We saw real growth in him, and I think that it was a good play by Armentrout to kill him off now because it hit us hard rather than last book when we barely knew him. But still point being Adam didn’t deserve to be out shadowed by a raunchy Katy and Daemon scene.

I do like things about the book though and I definitely want to continue reading the series. I loved Blake. Now don’t get me wrong I hated that he killed Adam, but he was a really interesting character. You can see how he has been sculpted and manipulates by Daedalus but also how he still feels the loss of his family and he isn’t completely inhuman. He’s still a dick, lets get that straight. But I can appreciate a good vintage Pacman shirt.

Shout to Ash for that character development of being able to sit next to Katy throughout the movie. Third wheeling is hard and when you have to do it with someone you think is gonna end up killing everyone and ruining everything you love; I would find it hard too.

Anyway, despite its flaws I think it progresses the story along really well and definitely will continue on with the series.

See ya then
