Kindred Spirits Review
“ Welcome to Star Wars, man! Welcome to the line!”
Kindred Spirits is a really short book by Rainbow Rowell that follows Elena and her adventures in a 3 person line waiting for the first film in the Star Wars revamp. With Gabe and Troy as companions, Elena comes to learn the lesson of Expectation vs Reality. This review does contain spoilers.
So, I have a confession. I have watched like one Star Wars film so I can’t really relate to Elena in that sense so if you’re looking for a Star Wars heavy review, sorry this isn’t it.
Elena was way braver than I would have been. I hate when thing don’t go to plan and so would have probably gone home when I had the chance. Especially with her mom constantly giving her a way out, Elena is clearly a rather headstrong character. Troy was the best character though. He just brought so much excitement and kinda reminded me of Elena’s dad in the way he was a long time Star Wars fan.
In terms of writing style, I think Rainbow made a really wise choice in keeping the character list to only three main characters. We got to bond with the characters in the way that they bonded. There wasn’t really room to be picky over who we liked and didn't.
Honestly, I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. I took almost a Gabe approach thinking that this was only for Star Wars fans but honestly, I think anyone can relate to this. We all have something we are passionate over. Be it that one band or that one sport and when you find someone who has the same level of excitement and passion for it as you, there’s nothing better.
